I got started selling on Depop when I was helping one of my girlfriend clean her closets. As we were listing her clothes for sale on Craigslist, she suggested we also look online. A few searches later and we were listing her clothes on Ebay, Mercari, and of course Depop. While I’ve written about selling on Ebay before (my most profitable selling adventure- read about that here), I’ve yet to write about my friend’s success with Depop. So today I thought I would let her take over and describe how to sell on Depop and make bank.
Getting Started to Sell on Depop
It was a very simple process to sign up for Depop for her account. You can use the Apple App store or Google Play store, and download the Depop app. Then just fill out the profile, hit the sell button, and upload a picture of the item you want to sell. Fill in the details about your item, the description and price and then hit publish.
There is no cost for listing items for sale on Depop. But, if you end up selling something you will be charged 10 cents. Other fees can be incurred depending on the payment methods you choose. It’s important to be aware of the charges ahead of time so you can calculate out how “worth it” selling on Depop will be for you.
Sellers can receive their money one of two different ways: Paypal or the Depop Wallet. Your buyers will be able to use a debit card, credit card, or Paypal balance (if you choose Paypal).
Make sure what you are selling is described clearly and accurately. Just like any store, you can use discounts and sales as incentives to sell your clothing. Buyers will also be able to leave reviews that other buyers can read, so you’ll want to make sure to have the best customer service you can have.
Like any other selling site online, you will have some restriction on what you will be able to sell. Do not sell anything that is counterfeit. Depop is very strict on forgery items and anything that is fake and you could get your account suspended.
Presentation is the Key Selling Point
Just like any business you will need to put effort into your product pictures. Clothing needs to be freshly washed, ironed if needed, and laid out nicely. My personal favorite style are flat lays which make a great “first” photo. You’ll want to follow that photo up with pictures of the product that shows what it really looks like and how it hangs.
Truthful Description of Items
My friends and I like to help each other with the descriptions that we write for our items. We all feel that a good solid truthful description will reduce any misunderstanding of what condition the item is in, what color it really is, the size, and what kind of material it is made of. Give your items fair prices. You do not want to over price yourself just to make an extra buck on one item. Price everything fairly and do some research on items that you may have questions on and learn recognize pieces that aren’t worth your time with the Depop fees, shipping etc.
When I write up my descriptions, I find that this is a perfect place to discuss my refund, exchange and shipment policies. For me and my friends, we all believe that it is better to not charge any shipping charges. If the buyer sees no shipping charges, they are more likely to buy from one of our sites then a site with charges. Make sure that after a buyer has bought an item that it gets shipped within a week. If there is going to be a delay, email your customer and let them know about the delay.
I sometimes run special offers to increase sales. The key to doing special offers is to create excitement and drive new buyers to your site. I usually do this by picking a couple of my most viewed items and adding them together. For instance, buy a cute sweater and get a matching handbag. The change of seasons is great too. Seasonal items go on sale as the seasons change.
Instagram discounts are also a great idea. To help build up your brand and profile, offer Instagram followers a 10 per cent discount. This is where a lot of your followers will be found in the first place. All the buyer has to do is say they follow you on Instagram and give you their username on Instagram. You then apply the 10 per cent discount on the items that they buy. You will find that this is a great way to advertise your Depop profile and will increase the number of followers for you.
Research Your Niche
When first stating out on Depop, it’s a good idea to become familiar with a niche or area you want to sell in. Depop is a popular place for teens to shop, so learning what’s trendy might be a great place to start. Other items can do well too though. Especially rare and unique items. If you know what you are looking at, you can make money selling almost anything.
Know Your Buyers
We all try and get to know our buyers. We look for them on Facebook and read their profiles and try to talk to them through the chat lines. All of us have leaned our lesson to get our payments up front now. Most people are honest and we do our best to be as honest as we can with all our buyers. We feel that by being honest with them will make them a great repeat buyer. Having a faithful following will increase your chances of sales. Your followers will see new items all the time and will most likely buy from you a second time.
Another helpful hint is to go out and buy some mailing bags and a large roll of bubble wrap, for the things your selling. Your customers will be happy to know that you took the time to safely package up what they have just bought from you. The mailing bags come in a variety of sizes and are easy to address with a marker. I inform my buyers that it will take anywhere from 3-5 days to get to them.
Make sure you are mailing the proper item to the right person. Double check everything. Verify the that buyers address is the same that is listed on their PayPal account. Use a tracking number to keep track of packages you have sent out is a good idea. This will also act as a fraud-prevention for you and your customer.
Interact with Your Buyers
I also like to get back to my customers right away. Some have questions that need to be answered and some may want to barter with me. What ever they have in mind, I still answer all questions they have and I do it right away. Seeing the notifications as they come into my phone is a big help. I have Depop right on my home page on my phone so I do not miss anything.
Add a Simple Note to Your Buyer
Give your buyer a simple little thank you note in every order. Buyers appreciate the attention and will remember your kindness. Make sure you write their first name on the note and wish them well on their purchase. It does not take much time and it may even have that customer coming back for more items. You may just want to say thank you or you could add a little story about the item. What ever you choose, it will surprise your buyer and they will keep you in mind the next time they are looking for items. That’s pretty much it! While I can’t guarantee you’ll become rich by following these tips, I know that if you consistently follow the above advice you should be able to make your Depop adventure profitable.
